This collection contains guidebooks, maps, brochures, postcards and photographs related to World War I which Gilkey collected. The bulk of the collection consists of postcards, primarily of France and Belgium. There are individual cards as well as postcard souvenir albums (groups of postcards picturing views of a specific location, bound together in booklet form) in the collection.

Engineering professor. Herbert J. Gilkey (1890-1976) received a degree from Oregon State University (1911), a B.S. (1916) from MIT, and an S.B. from Harvard. He was employed with the Pennsylvania Railroad until he served with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and the American Relief Administration during World War I. He then worked for the Lord Engineering Company (1919-1921) on reinforced concrete design, the University of Illinois (1921-1923) where he also received an M.S. degree, ...
